What is Sabarimala Mandalam and Makaravilakku Season 2026-27?

Sabarimala is the hill temple of Lord Ayyappa in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. The temple is not open all year. It opens during Mandalapooja, Makaravilakku, Vishu and on the first days of each Malayalam month (Kerala government site).

The Mandala-Makaravilakku season is the main pilgrim season. It has the 41-day Mandala period, then the Makaravilakku festival in January.

Many pilgrims keep a 41-day vow (Mandala Vrutham). They wear a bead chain (Mala), live simply, and avoid smoking and alcohol. Black clothes are recommended (Kerala government site).

Do temples change their timings on Sabarimala Mandalam and Makaravilakku Season 2026-27?

The Kerala government's site lists this daily timetable for the Mandala-Makaravilakku season. It is the yearly practice, not a 2026 notice.

Here are the visit rules from the Kerala government's page. Take rests during the climb and follow the queue system. Do not jump the queue or use mobile phones in the temple.

Break coconuts only at the marked places. Do not bring firecrackers or weapons.

Only pilgrims who carry the Irumudi kettu (a bundle with a ghee-filled coconut) on the head climb the 18 holy steps (source). Other devotees use a different path.

The board's online booking site is sabarimalaonline.org, and the Kerala site has a Virtual Q menu (board's page). We could not confirm whether virtual queue booking is compulsory in 2026-27.
