What is Makar Sankranti and Pongal 2027?
Makar Sankranti marks the day the Sun moves from Dhanu to Makara (Capricorn). It is a festival for Surya, the Sun God. It has other names by region, such as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Uttarayana in Gujarat, Maghi and Magh Bihu (Drik Panchang).
People worship the rising Sun, bathe in holy rivers, give alms, and in Gujarat fly kites. In Tamil Nadu people cook Pongal and share it as prasad.
Thai Pongal is a four-day harvest festival in Tamil Nadu. On Bhogi people clean their homes and light bonfires. On Mattu Pongal cattle are decorated and worshipped (Drik Panchang).
Do temples change their timings on Makar Sankranti and Pongal 2027?
Here is what two temples have posted. Neither lists a change to daily darshan hours.
- Jagannath Temple, Puri
The temple's calendar lists Dhanu Sankranti and the start of Pahili Bhoga on 16 December 2026. It lists Makara Sankranti on Thursday 14 January 2027. It lists ritual days only.
- Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam
The temple's festival table lists 15 January 2027 as Thai 01, with a Namperumal procession at 11:30 PM. It lists another night procession at 11:30 PM on 16 January. Daily darshan hours are not in the table.
We did not find the Tamil Nadu government's 2027 holiday order for Pongal, or Gujarat's official kite festival dates. We also found no Makar Sankranti timing changes for temples such as Somnath or Dwarka.
