Meenakshi Amman Temple, in Madurai in Tamil Nadu, is a shrine to Goddess Meenakshi (Parvati) with consort Sundareshwarar (Shiva). It is also known as Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Thirukkoil.

One of the most celebrated Dravidian temples in India; devotees flock especially for the nightly Palliarai Pooja procession in which Sundareshwarar is carried in a palanquin to Meenakshi's shrine. History records that Shiva was originally the primary deity here but significance later shifted to Goddess Meenakshi as the chief deity.

Tamil Nadu carries a distinct temple identity of its own: Land of towering gopurams and living Dravidian temple traditions, from the Chola masterpieces to the great Pancha Bhoota Sthalas.
