Set in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, Brihadeeswarar Temple is a shrine to Lord Shiva (worshipped as a lingam). It is also known as Big Temple, Peruvudaiyar Kovil, Rajarajeshwaram, Thanjavur Periya Kovil.
A major pilgrimage site for devotees of Shiva and a celebrated architectural landmark; besides the main Shiva lingam it houses shrines to Vishnu, Ganesha, Subrahmanya, Parvati and Nataraja. The temple was built by Raja Raja Chola I to showcase his devotion to Shiva and the sophistication of the Chola empire.
Tamil Nadu carries a distinct temple identity of its own: Land of towering gopurams and living Dravidian temple traditions, from the Chola masterpieces to the great Pancha Bhoota Sthalas.
Darshan hours and daily worship
| Session | Timing (as published) |
|---|---|
| Morning | 6:00 AM - 12:30 PM |
| Evening | 4:00 PM - 8:30 PM |
Open all days of the week, with extended hours during festivals. This morning/evening darshan window is confirmed on both the temple's Tamil Nadu HR&CE page (tid 13968) and brihadeeswaratemple.com. IMPORTANT CORRECTION: the HR&CE page's own pooja-by-pooja text gives different individual clock times than what was previously listed here - the morning pooja is at 8:30 AM (not 6:30 AM) and the evening pooja is at 6:00 PM (not 5:30 PM); Uchikalam (12:00 noon) and the Ardhajama night pooja (8:00 PM) are unchanged. The HR&CE page names these simply as 'morning pooja' and 'evening pooja' rather than using the Kaala Sandhi / Sayarakshai terminology from the previously-cited secondary/informational source, so those Sanskrit names have been dropped from the ritual schedule rather than guessed. This is both an ASI-protected UNESCO World Heritage monument and an active HR&CE-administered temple; no separate ASI paid monument-entry ticket was found - the temple does not appear in ASI's own ticketed-monument booking portal (eticket.webfront.in / asi.payumoney.com, which lists ticketed cities such as Agra, Hampi and Thiruchirapalli but not Thanjavur) - and both brihadeeswaratemple.com and the HR&CE page confirm free entry for all devotees, with only a still-camera fee (Rs 50) and video fee (Rs 100, with permission) applying.
Poojas and daily rituals

Where this information comes from
Confidence: High. Individual pooja clock times are now corrected and confirmed directly from the temple's own Tamil Nadu HR&CE page (Arulmigu Pragadheeswarar Temple, tid 13968), the temple's genuine government administering-body source, which was not checked in the prior research pass. The overall 6:00 AM-12:30 PM / 4:00 PM-8:30 PM darshan window and free general entry are independently confirmed on both that HR&CE page and brihadeeswaratemple.com. No separate ASI monument ticket exists for this living temple, confirmed by its absence from ASI's own ticketed-monument portal.
