In Kolkata, West Bengal, Dakshineswar Kali Temple honours Goddess Kali worshipped as Bhavatarini (Sri Sri Jagadishwari Kalimata), standing on the reclining Lord Shiva. It is also known as Sri Sri Bhavatarini Kali Temple, Dakshineswar Kalibari.
One of the most famous Kali temples in India and central to the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda movement. The precinct brought together the Shakta, Vaishnava and Shaiva traditions in a single sacred space and is revered as the place where Sri Ramakrishna attained spiritual illumination. The temple was founded in 1855 AD by the philanthropist Rani Rashmoni, who purchased 54.4 bighas of land at Dakshineswar from James Hasty in 1847 and installed the idols on 31 May 1855, the day of Lord Jagannath's Snana Yatra.
West Bengal carries a distinct temple identity of its own: Land of the Divine Mother, where Kali is worshipped with fervour at Shakti Peethas along the Ganga and the tantric shrines of Birbhum.

History and architecture
Architecture
A grand nine-spired (Navaratna) temple in the Bengal style, standing on the eastern bank of the River Bhagirathi (Hooghly). The complex also holds a Radha-Krishna (Vishnu) temple, twelve identical Shiva temples along the riverfront, a Natmandir and bathing ghats.
History
The temple was founded in 1855 AD by the philanthropist Rani Rashmoni, who purchased 54.4 bighas of land at Dakshineswar from James Hasty in 1847 and installed the idols on 31 May 1855, the day of Lord Jagannath's Snana Yatra. It became the spiritual home of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, who served as a priest here and realised the living presence of the Divine Mother before the Bhavatarini idol. It was also here that the young Narendranath Dutta was drawn to Ramakrishna and set on the path to becoming Swami Vivekananda.

Where this information comes from
Confidence: High. The daily aarti/darshan schedule with individual clock times, and the morning/evening opening hours, are now confirmed directly on the temple's own official website, at its correct working domain (dakshineswarkalitemple.org). This corrects the previously listed officialWebsite (dakshineswarkalitemple.in), which no longer resolves (DNS failure - the domain appears to be dead/expired). No entry fee, paid darshan tier, or documented weekly closure day was found anywhere on the official site, confirming free general darshan with no closure day.
