Set in Ponda, Goa, Shri Mangeshi Temple honours Lord Shiva worshipped as Mangesh in linga form. It is also known as Shree Mangesh Devasthan, Mangueshi Temple.
One of the largest and most visited temples in Goa, and the kuladevata (family deity) of Goud Saraswat Brahmins of the Vatsa and Koundinya gotras. The temple originally stood near Kushasthali (present day Cortalim) on the Zuari river.
Goa carries a distinct temple identity of its own: Goa's temple heritage is concentrated largely in the Ponda taluka, where centuries old Saraswat deities and shrines survive after being carried inland to escape Portuguese era destruction and forced conversion.

History and architecture

History
The temple originally stood near Kushasthali (present day Cortalim) on the Zuari river. When the Portuguese began religious conversions in that area around 1560, the deity was moved to Mangeshi village in Priol, then under Hindu rulers of the Sonde dynasty in Ponda's Antruz Mahal. The Peshwas donated the village of Mangeshi to the temple in 1739. The current temple building dates to 1890, with a major renovation and installation of a golden kalasha completed in 1973. Temple tradition links the name Mangesh to a legend in which Shiva, hiding from Parvati as a tiger, was addressed by her as Trahi Mam Grisha.
