Set in Ponda, Goa, Shri Nagesh Temple honours Lord Shiva as the self-manifested (swayambhu) Nagesh Maharudra. It is also known as Shri Saunsthan Nagesh Maharudra, Nagueshi Temple.
Regarded as a swayambhu Shiva shrine and family deity for Gaud Saraswat Brahmins of the Kaushik, Vatsa and Bharadwaj gotras; local legend holds the linga was discovered after a cow was seen showering milk on the stone. The earliest epigraphic reference is a 1222 CE copper plate inscription from Savoi Verem mentioning Shree Nagnath.
Goa carries a distinct temple identity of its own: Goa's temple heritage is concentrated largely in the Ponda taluka, where centuries old Saraswat deities and shrines survive after being carried inland to escape Portuguese era destruction and forced conversion.

History
The earliest epigraphic reference is a 1222 CE copper plate inscription from Savoi Verem mentioning Shree Nagnath. A 1413 CE Vijayanagara era inscription records a land donation to the temple. The main temple building was renovated in 1780 and pilgrim rest houses were renovated again in 1877. Unlike most Goan temples, it was never relocated during Portuguese rule and remains at its original site in Bandivade, also known as Bandode.
