In Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, Kumari Amman Temple (Kanyakumari Bhagavathy Amman Temple) is a shrine to Devi Kanyakumari, virgin form of Parvati. It is also known as Devi Kanyakumari Temple, Bhagavathi Amman Kovil.
The temple is traditionally counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas, the sites where a part of Sati's body is said to have fallen after Daksha's yagna; sources here describe the spot as marking Sati's back or the area around her spine, though accounts vary in the exact wording. The temple is mentioned in ancient Sangam-era Tamil works such as Manimekalai and Purananuru, and references to the goddess at this cape appear in the Mahabharata and Ramayana as well.
Tamil Nadu carries a distinct temple identity of its own: Land of towering gopurams and living Dravidian temple traditions, from the Chola masterpieces to the great Pancha Bhoota Sthalas.

History
The temple is mentioned in ancient Sangam-era Tamil works such as Manimekalai and Purananuru, and references to the goddess at this cape appear in the Mahabharata and Ramayana as well. According to legend, the goddess took the form of a young girl, Devi Kanya Kumari, and performed penance to marry Shiva in order to be able to slay the demon Banasura, who could only be killed by a virgin. Her wedding was interrupted by the sage Narada's trick and she remained eternally unmarried (Kanya), giving the town its name.
