Set in Uthamarkoil, Tamil Nadu, Adhipureeswarar Perumal Temple (Uthamar Kovil) honours Purushottama Perumal (Vishnu) with consort Poornavalli Thayar, alongside Shiva as Bhikshandar and Brahma in separate shrines. It is also known as Uthamar Kovil, Thirukkarambanoor, Bhikshandar Kovil.
The temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu temples glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham composed by the Alvar poet-saints; it is revered here by Thirumangai Alvar in ten hymns. It is one of only two temples in the Chola country where images of the Trimurti, Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma, are housed within the same premises, the other being the Hara Saabha Vimocchana Perumal Temple at Thirukkandiyur. According to temple legend, Vishnu appeared here as a Kadamba tree; Brahma worshipped him, and Shiva sought atonement in this spot after his sin of cutting off one of Brahma's heads, which is why all three deities are enshrined together.
Tamil Nadu carries a distinct temple identity of its own: Land of towering gopurams and living Dravidian temple traditions, from the Chola masterpieces to the great Pancha Bhoota Sthalas.
