Bakreshwar Temple stands in Bakreshwar, West Bengal, is a shrine to Devi Mahishmardini with Bhairav Vakranath. It is also known as Vakreshwar Temple, Bakreshwar Shakti Peetha, Mahishmardini Shaktipeeth.
One of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India, and unusual among them for being paired with a cluster of natural hot springs (kundas), which pilgrims also consider sacred and visit alongside the temple. Local tradition connects the site to the sage Ashtavakra, who is said to have performed intense penance here after being cursed with physical deformities; Lord Shiva healed him, and the place came to be known as Bakreshwar.
West Bengal carries a distinct temple identity of its own: Land of the Divine Mother, where Kali is worshipped with fervour at Shakti Peethas along the Ganga and the tantric shrines of Birbhum.
