History
The temple is among Assam's most ancient shrines, believed to have an early structure from the Koch period. It suffered severe damage in the great earthquake of 1697 and was rebuilt by Ahom ruler Rajeshwar Singha in 1752. Animal sacrifice is prohibited at this shrine, unlike many other Assamese temples, with symbolic offerings used instead.
